Botanical description and occurrence:
Pointed, hearted or sweetheart cabbage as it is sometimes known is a type of cabbage with a pointed head. The leaves are more open than those of round-headed cabbage and they have a softer texture and sweeter taste. Cultivar ´Calibos´ is a medium-late variety which is intended for the canning industry and immediate consumption, as well as short-term storage. The head is pointed, nicely closed off and has a longer outer stalk. The head weighs 2 - 2.5 kg. The growing time from transplanting to harvest is 105 - 115 days.
Why to have the plant in your garden:
This cultivar has a high sugar content and a crisp inner structure, as well as a delicious taste. The red color of cabbage reflects its concentration of anthocyanin polyphenols, which contribute to red cabbage containing significantly more protective phytonutrients. Interest in anthocyanin pigments continues to intensify because of their health benefits as dietary antioxidants, as an anti-inflammatory, and their potentially protective, preventative, and therapeutic roles in a number of human diseases.
